Hello You Lovely Lot!!!
As the time has come where more of you are off to University, I thought I would give out my advice on University life. This is specifically for those of you who are moving away from home into accommodation as that is what I did and so I can hopefully help any of you that have decided to take this path :) I also have a little bit of advice on the course side of things as well though so if you would like to know what I have to say about that, then keep reading :)
A lot of people worry like crazy when moving away to University and really, there is no need to whatsoever. Some of the things people worry about include not having any friends there, not liking the people they are living with, not knowing whether you've picked the right course for you, and the typical one, not having a clue how to cook and thinking you are going to live on super noodles for the next few years.
Well worry no more because I didn't know anyone at University living with me, there was of course some people in my building I didn't like as much as others, and I am possibly one of the worst cooks ever, and I've survived my whole 3 years of University.
If you are worried about who you are going to be living with, just think, everybody else starting the same year as you is in exactly the same boat. You aren't the only one panicking. If you are a bit lost when you get there and you aren't one of those confident people who would run up to anyone and start a full on conversation about how hopeless you are that you can't find your way round University or even find your own room, then don't worry, I can guarantee some 2nd or 3rd year will see you and realise you are a little lost fresher who needs assistance. Not everyone at Uni is scary and mean!!!
If you find yourself not liking the people you are living with, there are always alternatives. Your Uni may let you change rooms or buildings, or failing that, your room is just somewhere for you to keep your things and sleep, you do and will make friends with people from other accommodation buildings as well. In my first year I actually spent more time in the building two along from mine, instead of in my own building.
If like me, you can't cook to save your life, then fear not!!! People sharing your kitchen are there to help, even if they are also a little bit hopeless when it comes to cooking. Between all of you, you will be able to keep each other from starving. Somebody you live with will be able to cook, its more than likely really. And if not, then there is always the Takeaway around the corner until you work out how to bash together a mean spag bol ;) Also, you will have a microwave in your kitchen. That will be your best friend throughout your whole uni life, trust me :p
As for your course, this is something that can be really difficult to decide on. Do I do something that I already know I can do and really enjoy? Do I choose something I know absolutely nothing about but have a huge interest in? For me, I've known from an early age that all I ever really wanted to do was dance. However, I'm still not 100% sure on where abouts in the dance sector I want to be. My sister on the other hand, who has just moved to university yesterday, has chosen something she doesn't really know anything about but has gained a huge interest in over the last year or so. And that is Criminology. The complete opposite really to what I do. She asked herself whether she has chosen the right course and I could only really say one thing. You don't know until you try it out. And if you don't like it, then there is always the option to transfer to something else.
I hope that these few points have helped all of you that are starting University this year and are feeling a bit worried about it. If you have any questions about Uni life that I haven't already answered above, then by all means, leave them in the comments below and of course I will answer them as best I can for you :)
Speak to you all next Sunday!!!
